Board of Directors
Brett Kirkpatrick - President
This is my second year as president and my 11th year of volunteering on the board of directors. I am proud to be part of a society that gives back so much to the community. It's important to me that Funtastic is known for more than just a great ball tournament and music festival.
We put thousands of dollars into the local sports programs and community groups throughout the year and for me, the greatest reward is the lives we impact.
Outside of Funtastic, I am a Family Law & Personal Injury lawyer and partner at Davidson Lawyers LLP.
Sandra Simao- 1st. Vice-President
My name is Sandra. I have been a director with Funtastic for about 18 years now. I love being part of this organization. We do a lot of great things for this community and that is very important to me.
In my 18 years as a director I have held several positions; 2014 will be the first year as 1st Vice-President role with the Funtastic Sports Society as well as the Stage Manager.
Akbal Mund- 2nd Vice-President
I moved to Vernon in 1993 from New Westminster, have been involved in Funtastic since 1994 as a player and volunteer.
I have been involved in the Vernon sport community as a player in slo-pitch and orthodox ball, men's soccer, and as a coach with women's competitive soccer and youth soccer.
I have been busy as a volunteer in this fabulous city with many events, from Terry Fox Run and as President of the BC Winter Games in 2012. I am currently President of the Vernon Soccer Association and the North Okanagan Sports Society.
I have been a member of the Funtastic Board of Directors for the past four years.
Darcy Sochan – 3rd Vice-President
I was raised in Vernon and briefly moved up north to Fort Nelson for 5 yrs. I credit my move back to the Okanagan to the Funtastic Tournament. I was involved with bringing our Ft. Nelson slow-pitch team to participate in the Funtastic fun in 1991. It was then that I realized what I took for granted with all the Vernon area had to offer. So with my wife Cheryl, we made plans to move by the following year.
I had organized a team for the next 16 years of Funtastic, with several friends coming from outside area. In 2008, I decided it was time to change from participant to volunteer. I joined the Funtastic Executive Team taking on the responsibilities of equipment, scheduling, and fields. Outside of Funtastic, I am a realtor with Century 21 Executives.
Steve Cousins- Treasurer
I was a director and treasurer of Funtastic for 5 years from 2004 to 2009. Being sports minded and wanting to stay involved in local community organizations, I re-joined as director and treasurer at the 2012 AGM. Funtastic is well known for organizing a great slo-pitch tournament and has done so going on 29 years; the economic spin-off to the community is huge year after year.
It is also a fun organization to be involved with; but the most important to me about Funtastic is building a better community through sport. There are countless local sports groups that have received contributions from the Funtastic Sports Society.
I have lived in greater Vernon since 1995 with my wife Tina and teen-aged children Mitchell and Taylor. I am a chartered accountant and a partner with Sladen Moore Chartered Accountants.
Diana Williamson- Secretary
I am entering into Funtastic 2014 for my 11th year as a director and my 8th as secretary. Being part of this great organization that contributes to our beautiful community is very important to me. Having grown up in Vernon, I am proud to have the opportunity to give back. You will find me looking after the information, registration and scoreboards.
Along with volunteering as a director for Funtastic, I am the proud mom of three young adult children, Teenina, Ashley and Travis. I also work full time and can be found volunteering at many events including the Terry Fox Run. I am the executive director of another well known Vernon event- The Vernon Winter Carnival.
Val Trevis- Director
This is the 2nd year for Val as a Director with the Funtastic Sports Society and she looks forward once again to managing all of the volunteers in 2014. Val is an avid sports enthusiast with a deep passion for water sports. For the past 12 years, she has been both a paddler and a coach for the dragon boat community and a founding member of Poseidon’s Fury Dragon Boat Team, a mixed team based in Vernon.
Val spends a great deal of time volunteering in Vernon, her community of 15 years where she manages Nixon Wenger LLP, the largest law firm in the North Okanagan. She is particularly interested in the sporting community and is often involved in working toward events that boost the economic opportunities for this region. Val is a founding director with the North Okanagan Sports Society and she believes that sport is not only vital to the health and well being of her community and citizens, it also offers amazing economic opportunities for our region that attracts investment and sustainable development.
“Funtastic is a very natural fit that is well suited for both my interests and skills”, said Val. “Having several thousand ball players and music lovers come to our community is pretty amazing and I look forward to celebrating 30 years of Funtastic in 2014”.
Tim Reardon – Music Director
Tim Reardon brings his experience in the music industry to the board and manages the A&W Funtastic Music Festival. Playing music professionally for more than 28 years and a 21 year member of the popular band "The Young'uns", Tim is the natural choice for music director. He has been involved with the Funtastic for many years and has seen it change from its humble beginnings to the present day.
His hand on the pulse of the local and Canadian music scene enables him to get the job done; from booking the headliners andlocal acts, to the sound, stage and lighting. Tim's committed to the Funtastic's success and as a musician and business owner (Tutor Tech Computers), knows that the key to running a successful music festival is keeping balance between the talent and the budget.
Daniel Proulx - Director
I grew up being raised by a single mom with 2 younger brothers. We weren’t very well off but with financial help from extended family I was able to play hockey, a sport I loved. Although I didn’t become an NHL superstar, actually not even close, playing sport as a kid became so much of who I am today. I work well on a team, I am a good winner as well as loser, and the competitive drive has stuck with me.
I can’t imagine what life would be like now had I not been given the opportunity to play hockey as a kid. That is why I am proud to be a director of Funtastic, so I can help build a better community through sport.
I moved to Vernon 4 years ago and have volunteered for Funtastic ever since. I work as an advisor at BCAA and I am President of Junior Chamber International Vernon for 2014. I am looking forward to a great year working beside amazing people.
Jim Tennant– Director
My name is Jim Tennant and I am proud to be a new member to the Funtastic Board of Directors. I have had the pleasure of volunteering for Funtastic in different forms since my arrival here in Vernon and look forward to doing my part to keep pushing the boundaries of success for this outstanding community endeavor!
The Funtastic experience is far more than a weekend of slo-pitch, camaraderie and entertainment. It is part of the fabric of what a strong community is all about – lending a helping hand to those that need it and supporting our own! As the Manager for Save on Foods I am thrilled to also lend corporate support for this incredible Society as well.
Deb White – Director
Deb is extremely active in the North Okanagan community where she is involved with numerous charitable causes, including the Vernon Winter Carnival, Caroling for a Cause, and now as a director with the Vernon Funtastic Sports Society. Through her dedication to her community Deb has been recognized with the 2010 MBABC Community Service Award and the 2012 CMP Best Community Service Effort award, and in 2012, White House Mortgages was voted the best in the Okanagan by the Okanagan Life Magazine.
Deb began her brokering career nearly 15 years ago. Almost 9 years ago Deb formed her own company, White House Mortgages which she has grown to team of 23 brokers located throughout the Okanagan Valley and lower mainland.
Deb has also been a strong advocate for the Canadian mortgage brokering industry – attending numerous industry events, tradeshows, and seminars with her brokers. She was on the executive of the Okanagan Mortgage Lenders Association for two years, and has been a director on the MBABC Board for the past three years. Deb’s role on the MBABC Board has been as Magazine Chair, Sponsorship Committee, and Vice President.
Deb’s entire team is made up of strong community supporters. We believe in giving back to the communities that have helped our business become a household name. We care about our clients and treat them as we would our own family members. We ensure their confidentiality and treat them with the utmost respect.
