Rules

Funtastic Slo-Pitch Tournament rules are based on NSA Canada guidelines, with select modifications to suit our event format. All teams are expected to review and follow the rules to ensure fair play, safety, and a great experience for everyone involved. Please read through carefully before game time and reach out to the Funtastic office if you have any questions.

Funtastic 2026 Rules & Regulations

Funtastic follows NSA Canada rules with the following exceptions and amendments:

1. Home Team

  • The home team is determined by a coin toss.

2. Game Balls

  • Game balls are provided by your Funtastic umpire.
  • 12″ optic yellow balls are to be used.

3. Game Schedules & Time Limits

  • All games must start at their scheduled time. No grace periods—no exceptions.
  • Games may begin early if the field and umpire are available.
  • Games are 7 innings or a maximum of 1 hour 15 minutes, whichever comes first.
  • In round robin play, no new inning may start after 1 hour 5 minutes.
  • All games must end in time for the next scheduled game.
  • Teams are responsible for tracking their own time—umpires will not provide time warnings.
  • No warm-up balls are allowed.
  • Tossing the game ball around the bases is permitted once per inning per team.
  • A “ball” will be awarded if a ball is not returned directly to the pitcher after “Time” is called.

4. Runs Per Inning

  • Maximum of 3 outs or 5 runs per inning, whichever comes first.
  • The 7th inning (or any inning starting after 1 hour) is an open inning (no run cap).
  • If an open inning cannot be completed within the time limit, the score reverts to the last completed inning.

5. Pitching

Funtastic follows NSA pitching rules with the following:

  • Maximum of 3 warm-up pitches at the start of a pitcher’s first inning only.
  • New pitchers may take 3 warm-up pitches.
  • Only one step is allowed during delivery; pivot foot must remain grounded at release.
  • Pitch distance: 50–60 feet; arc: 6–10 feet.
  • Illegal pitches are called as “Delayed Dead Ball.” If not swung at, result is a ball.
  • If swung at, the illegal pitch is nullified and play continues.
  • Strike mats must be used and cover home plate.

6. Rosters & Line-Ups

  • Minimum age: 16 (no exceptions).
  • Players may only be rostered on one team.
  • Format: 6 men / 4 women. Minimum 3 women required.
  • NSA Extra Player rules apply (max 12 batters, must include both genders).
  • Teams must field at least 9 players (including 3 women) or forfeit (10–0 loss).
  • If only 9 players are present, the 10th spot is an automatic out.
  • Losing required players mid-game results in a forfeit.

7. Batting Order

  • No restrictions on batting order.
  • Any number of males or females may bat consecutively.
  • Walk rule: if a male is walked and followed by a female, he is awarded second base; the female may choose to bat or take first.

8. Substitutions

  • Unlimited substitutions allowed.
  • Starters may re-enter once, in original batting position.
  • Substitutes and starters cannot appear in the lineup at the same time.

9. Walk Rule (Male Batters)

  • Followed by a female: awarded second base; female chooses to bat or take first.
  • Followed by an automatic out: awarded first base; next batter hits.

10. Courtesy Runners

  • Must be female.
  • Each player may run once per game.

11. Home Run Rule (Fenced Diamonds Only)

  • No limit on home runs.
  • First two home run hitters per team become designated hitters.
  • Only designated hitters may hit home runs—others result in an out.

12. No Bunting

  • All bunts are automatic outs.

13. No Lead-Offs

  • Runners must maintain contact with the base until the ball is hit or reaches the plate.
  • Violations result in an out and dead ball.

14. No Base Stealing

  • Runners advance only after contact.

15. Sliding

  • Allowed at all bases except the safe scoring line.
  • Sliding at the scoring line = automatic out.

16. Tagging

  • Tagging runners is permitted at all bases.

17. Safe Scoring Line

  • Designed to prevent collisions at home plate.
  • Runners must cross the scoring line—touching the plate = out.
  • Contact with defensive players may result in an out and/or ejection.
  • Safety rules are strictly enforced.

18. No Metal Spikes

  • Immediate removal required.
  • 5 minutes to correct or player is removed.
  • No substitute = automatic out or potential forfeit.

19. Infield Fly Rule

  • In effect.

20. Fair / Foul / Out of Play

  • Umpire is the final authority.
  • Dead ball rules apply once ball leaves play.
  • Tagging up required on fly balls.

21. Mercy Rule

  • 10-run lead after 5 innings (or 4.5 if home team ahead) ends the game.
  • Game ends immediately when winning run is scored.

22. Tie Games

  • Round robin: games remain tied.
  • Playoffs: extra innings with runner starting on second base.

23. Scoresheets & Reporting

  • Home team keeps official score.
  • Max run differential: ±10.
  • Winning team submits signed scoresheet within 45 minutes.
  • Incomplete or late sheets may result in a 0–0 tie.

24. Standings & Tie-Breakers

  • Win = 2 points, Tie = 1, Loss = 0.
  • Tie-breakers:
    1. Head-to-head
    2. Run differential
    3. Fewest runs against
    4. Coin toss

25. Disputes

  • Umpire decisions are final.
  • Umpire-in-Chief may rule on interpretations if necessary.

26. Weather & Field Conditions

  • Games may be cancelled due to unsafe conditions.
  • Cancelled games = 10–10 tie.
  • Umpire has final say on playability.
  • Teams must still report at scheduled times.

27. Alcohol & Drug Policy

  • Alcohol permitted only in designated beer gardens.
  • Violations result in immediate removal and possible team forfeiture.
  • Zero tolerance policy enforced by security and law enforcement.
  • All bags/containers are subject to inspection.

These policies are strictly enforced. No exceptions.

PLEASE NOTE: The RCMP, Military Police and security personnel will be patrolling all Funtastic grounds, parking lots, fields and dugouts expressly looking for liquor and other prohibited substances. There is ZERO TOLERANCE for the possession and/or consumption of alcohol or prohibited substances on public property.
